Can Kara Lawson Build Duke’s Next Basketball Powerhouse?
My newest story at the Ringer on Kara Lawson, former WNBA star and Celtics assistant coach
Hey everyone! Here is my newest story at the Ringer on Kara Lawson, Duke women’s basketball coach. She left her assistant-coaching job at the Celtics to try to turn Duke into a powerhouse. This is a story about drive, ambition, love, and the sacred relationship between player and coach.
I love writing about driven people—people who wake up every day with a sense of urgency. That is Kara to the core. Even spending five minutes with her, you can feel it. You can see it. It’s infectious. I tried to show that energy and that impact in the piece. But as much as it is about her ambition, her fire, it is about her warmth, too. A side people don’t see. I hope when you read this you understand how important it is to have coaches and mentors, especially in the women’s game. I think what she is building is really special, and I appreciated that even though she has not yet reached her goal, a national championship, she sees beauty in *this* moment. In being en route. In the almosts and not yets. Glimmers of goodness on the way to greatness. Thanks for reading as always <3
