New story at Ringer: Greg Oden's Long Walk Home
"I can look in the mirror and realize that in this moment, I’m happy," says Oden, coaching at Butler. A story about resilience, addiction, shame, identity, and ultimately, the beauty of coming home.
Hi everyone! My newest story at The Ringer is now live: I profiled Greg Oden. Basketball gave him everything. Then took it all away. No one would blame the former no. 1 pick for walking away from a game that brought him so much pain, but Oden simply can’t quit basketball. He still, miraculously, loves it. Now he’s back home again in Indiana, searching for purpose on the sidelines at Butler.
This story meant a lot to me in ways I can’t describe. I hope you enjoy it, sit with it, and take it all in. Share it with people you know. I hope by the end you ask yourself what home means. What continuing to wake up every day and try to feel at home in your own body, your own soul, means. We simply are all trying to do this, every day, every year, for the rest of our lives.
