Hi everyone! My newest story for The Ringer is on Yunus Musah, rising soccer star with USMNT. He’s about to play on the biggest stage of his life at the 2022 World Cup. He has ties to four different countries, but ultimately chose to play for the U.S. “It’s really important to know where you come from,” he says. At its core, this is a story about family, roots, perseverance, ambition and youth. He has a remarkable journey. In other news, my book, “Giannis: The Improbable Rise of an NBA MVP,” was chosen as the 2022 book club pick for the The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism! Many books will be provided to high school students for this awesome program. I’m so grateful! I love talking with students, and one day would love to become a professor myself (Manifesting here?!)
I’ll leave you with this quote I found from Walter Isaacson, from a Q and A with Ben Smith of Semafor. Isaacson was asked: “How do you research a biography when the story is happening around you in public?” Isaacson replied: “The goal of most biographies is to take thousands of pieces of information and weave them into narrative threads. This is more difficult when you’re behind the scenes in a set of real-time dramas and the information is gushing at you like a fire hose. My hope is to provide it to readers straight and let them make their own assessments and value judgements.”
I hope you enjoyed my story on Yunus today. Please share it, Tweet it (@MirinFader) if you can. Have a great rest of the week.
