New story: The Future is Scoot Henderson
He's not afraid to stand out. “You’re not following anybody’s footsteps. You’re being the leader of yourself," he says.
Hey everyone! My newest profile for the Ringer is on Scoot Henderson, G League Ignite star and projected no. 2 pick in the 2023 NBA draft. “You’re not following anybody’s footsteps. You’re being the leader of yourself,” he says. It’s a story about being unique, taking a different path, family, work ethic and a love of books. Yes, books! This book nerd thoroughly enjoyed that part of the reporting :)

Last night I saw this quote from Maggie Smith, a fantastic poet: “Sometimes gifts—the best ones—arrive hidden inside layers of trouble. All kinds of trouble, too: mistakes, failures, regrets, embarassments, abandonments. You won’t see the gift if you’re only seeing the trouble. Keep opening until you get there.”
I love this and I really needed to hear it. People only see the finished products of our work. They don’t see the times we are tearing ourselves, our sentences a part. But the gift is the work. The gift is the doing. It’s being in Henderson, NV with Scoot, sipping a smoothie, trying to understand his competitive drive, his humility. All the interesting parts about him. Being present. When my mind starts to wander, starts to only see that tunnel vision of “trouble,” I go back to the gift of just being present. Reporting, writing. Being in my element.
Thanks for reading. I hope you’ll share the story on your platforms (because now we have to join like…23878238238 of them, right? Find me on Post, too… LOL. Still don’t quite know how to use it. And, yes, I joined Instagram a decade late, add me, MirinFader. Same handle on Twitter to share the story as well.
Have a great weekend. Read for fun.
